Guitars Aren't Guns We want musicians, not politicians We don't have time for your “creative vision” We prefer to swallow the fictions That coat corporate sponsorships and old-time religions After all, your art's just entertainment For our passive consumption Who are you, Mr. Rock Star? My Cheetos don't preach to me! So let's just confide in the misleading conceptions Of those who rule us, based on deception Yeah, let's just take pride in That misleading perception: Consensus only comes through deception We want your melodies, not your opinions Can't you tell, we're not really listening We want to feel an escape from the system And don't need you to just rub our faces in it! For that, we have experts On TV and in office Chosen through the polls and the markets You, you're just something I buy at Target! So let's just confide in the misleading conceptions Of those who rule us, based on deception Yeah, let's just take pride in That misleading perception: Consensus only comes through deception I like his personality He's a good Christian My friends and family trust him He looks mighty powerful on TV My party says, “Go, go, go!” Part of me says, “No, no, no...”

Born to Buy 03:08
Born to Buy I'd been buying my rebellion 'Cause that's what they'd been selling That connected most with me I'm what I'm supposed to be: Walking, talking, shopping fuel for the economy There's a niche market for everybody! Where do these desires come from? What controls my decisions? Taught consumption with religion I've been plugged in since age 1 I've known your logos since before I had friends My thirst can't be quenched, my hunger never ends I was given The Reason Why: I was born to buy

Tea Party System We all live in separate neighborhoods Now that we've agreed to disagree No room for debate or discourse Don'chaknow, reality's always gotta fit in with my beliefs Divided, we barely stand We all shop at different grocery stores And read different magazines Who needs facts when we've got our faith?... Which compels us to work towards our own defeat Divided, we barely stand If you say it enough times And if you've got the means to say it loud enough And if enough people believe you... I guess that's how we democratize the truth! Who holds your truth? Have you ever owned a TV station? Who holds my truth? I ain't never owned no TV station! Divided, we barely stand

Give Peace a Chance Who would be dumb enough To give peace a chance? Who would be dumb enough To give peace a chance? Not me. Me, I want missile defense It makes such good money, and sense Who would be naïve enough To believe we shall overcome? Who could be naïve enough? Naïve-- ...enough? Not me. I'll tell you one thing: The meek shall inherit nothing Who would be ignorant enough To think love could win? Yeah, I want missile defense!

PMA 04:12
Positive Mental Attitude The only meaning of life is to live That's why we gotta stay positive The only meaning of life is to live That's why we think positive And if the very essence of my being Is a tiny little vibrating string We'll play music for life Bringing positive vibes It's so easy to wallow in self-doubt and self-defeat And do it over again, like rinse and repeat But everybody shines sometime Maybe it's just a misfiring synapse Or something awful just happened that makes you wanna collapse But with grey skies, the sun's always just off the horizon But sometimes, the loneliness remains And all you can do is feel ashamed Just remember that eventually, that feeling's gonna go away The only meaning of life is to live That's why we gotta stay positive The only meaning of life is to live That's why we think positive No book, no leader has the truth The only thing that's what real is what we say and do In order to survive, we bring positive vibes Now, you might say regarding political stance Or how few songs I write about love and romance That I've got a pretty negative outlook But when I get up here and rant and rave About the elite and how they misbehave It's because I still believe we can change the world They make life so hard to live But we can fight back by being positive And one day, we're going to see a real revolution!

What Are You Yo, you know me, that half-black MC People look at me funny, don't understand what they see Mexican? Persian? Jewish? Cuban? It's never enough, to just say I'm “human.” “So, what are you?” You ask, and I look to the ground It's like you'll tell me your name after I tell you my background No, I'm not asking you to apologize I guess your mind's gotta categorize The black kids say, “Hey now we'll let you say 'nigga'!” The white kids say, “Hey, I bet your cock's a little bigger!” And it's really more than just a question of dialectic Racism's a disease and millions are still infected My dad used to go to restaurants and not get served It's a little better now but we still don't get what we deserve I went to Argentina, and when I came back The news didn't give me the blues, it just gave me the blacks! Starvation on the radio, they don't play the facts, it's just cracker jacks (Fishbone) And now everyone is hassling me, Mr. Ambiguous Minority They always gotta check me extra long In airport security I can't sport a beard Or I look like the Muslim enemy With a mustache, they ask if I entered illegally And everyone wants me to identify I'm a human, mothafucka, is that all right? One their forms I always gotta check the box “other” 'Cause I'm not quite white, not quite a brother!

What is Guitars As Guns?

Guitars As Guns -- more commonly referred to as Gag – is Portland Oregon's most underground (not to mention under-rated) terrorist organization. Gag is responsible for many covert operations (known to include both rocking small clubs and murder). Though its resources are targeted mainly at Latin rhythms and North American post-punk song structures, Gag has agents stationed worldwide collecting influences, often under diplomatic cover.

Subcomandante Brendan, (guitar, vocals) Subcomandante Robert (drums, vocals) and Subcomandante Dusty (bass, vocals) created Gag on December 5th, 2009, recognizing that "intelligence constitutes the first line of attack." Gag doesn't fool around. Gag currently operates with about 3-5 employees spread among eight agencies -- Operational Planning and Coordination; Record Collection; Political Action and Liaison; Manpower, Rhythm and Groove Liaison, Logistics and Security; Being Punk as Fuck; Research; Technical Operations; and Blasting That Shit Loud.

A full picture of their inner workings is hazy at best, but among them are the Guest Artists, the special operations division that handles assassination and sabotage. The members of this special division include Sly Pig on tenor sax (Blue Cranes, National Flower, Decemberists) and Giancarlo Viviano on trumpet.

The album

On June 5th, 2010, Gag made public their first communication to the world, titled, Opportunity Costs. It contains roughly 10 dispatches of post-Latin-reggae-prog-punk. Gag realized that their live performances, referred to as “deeply satisfying” by many, were no longer enough. For a couple days, they locked themselves away in Left Orbit Studio in Portland, Oregon, conspiring. When they re-emerged in early April, they had the beginnings of the nefarious plot that would eventually produce Opportunity Costs. Three fundamental underlying principals guided their actions:

(1)Popular forces can win a war against the army.
(2)It is not necessary to wait until all conditions for making revolution exist; the insurrection can create them.
(3)Use your guitars as guns.

Key tracks include “Cumbia-Core,” with its catchy chorus and snarky lyrics; “PMA,” with its positive message and groovy rhythm; “Clandestino” a slightly punkier take on the Manu Chao song and “Born to Buy,” with its sudden time-change and wailing saxophone through the end.
